Job Corps Students Welcomed to DNR, part of Job Shadow Day
Louisiana Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) officials will host a group of students from the Carville Job Corps Academy to participate in the Ninth Annual Groundhog Job Shadow Program on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2006. DNR joins thousands of employers and agencies around the country that sponsor this event which is traditionally held on Groundhog Day in the month of February.
Since 1996, this initiative to engage students in the world of work has paired student “shadows” with “workplace mentors” to introduce students to the workplace and demonstrate the connection between academics and careers. The goal of Groundhog Job Shadow Day is to match more than one million young people with workplace mentors.
Over the past 41 years, Job Corps has provided opportunities to more than 2 million economically disadvantaged young Americans. Administered by the U.S. Department of Labor, this voluntary, residential training program offers vocational, academic, and social skills training to teenaged students at 122 centers nationwide, including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Each year, Job Corps serves nearly 65,000 young people.
The Carville Job Corps students shadowing at DNR range in age from 16 to 24 years and have interest in business office technology, petroleum fields, welding, and health occupations to name a few.
