COASTAL PARISHES TO RECEIVE DNR GRANTS

Twelve coastal parishes in the state will receive grants this year to implement their local coastal programs. The Department of Natural Resources' Coastal Management Division announced this week that award monies to local governments for coastal management plans have been approved under provisions of the federal Coastal Zone Management Act.

Coastal Resources Program Manager Greg DuCote said that both state and local programs are responsible for vegetated wetlands, coastal waters, and wetland habitats and resources. In addition, the coastal programs are responsible for reviewing and approving coastal use permits. Coastal zone administrators utilize the grants primarily in fighting coastal erosion. The local managers also advise DNR of potential impacts of proposed activity on coastal resources in their areas. Some local plans include monitoring polluted runoff and protecting waterfowl habitats.

In partnership with the state, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) provides the major portion of the funds for the program. Matching funds provided by the parishes reflect the commitment of local officials in protecting coastal resources in Louisiana.

Parishes receiving funding are Calcasieu, Cameron, Jefferson, Lafourche, Livingston, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St.Charles, St. James, St.Tammany, and Terrebonne. The total funding amount is $649,000.
